In late 80s in Oslo, guitarist Euronymous starts band Mayhem with the aim of creating "true Norwegian black metal". In just a few years he becomes the leader and main promoter of the new underground scene. And then the devil takes his due.
The film is based on the eponymous book that deals with actual events, from church burnings to murders, which have shocked the public in early 90s. Already while being in production it stirred up controversy among featured musicians and their audiences alike. Director Jonas Åkerlund, who briefly played drums for black metal pioneers Bathory in the early 80s, approaches the material with much energy and provides a film that is convincing in both humorous and tragic moments.
