Luxembourg, year 1854. The land is stricken by famine and disease. Inhabitants of a remote village live under strict rule of the Graff family that provides for their survival but demands total obedience in return. One day, this questionable idyll is disrupted by a stranger. Or is she a stranger?
After last year’s horror Wolfkin, this year’s program once again boasts an outstanding Luxembourgish genre film. The Last Ashes is a visually impressive neo-western, which recreates the historical era with impeccable detail. Through a revenge story, it addresses social inequality and the twisted nature of absolute power. It was the Luxembourgish entry at the 96th Academy Awards.
